Jump Ring Selection Guide

Jump rings are available in a range of sizes and thicknesses which can make the right choice somewhat confusing.

At BeadAddict we refer to the size as the outside diameter of the ring in millimetres along with the thickness, ie the wire diameter in millimetres.
The inside diameter is determined by the thickness of the wire. It may be estimated as the outside diameter minus twice the wire diameter.

eg. 5 x 0.7mm is a 5mm outside diameter ring, 0.7mm wire giving an inside diameter of 3.6mm.

The thicker the wire the heavier duty the ring but the larger the ring, the thicker the wire needed to maintain the strength of the ring. Refer to the chart below for a rough guide on what might be considered light medium and heavy weight for a range of popular rings.
Bear in mind softer metals will require thicker wire to be comparable in strength to harder metals.
